Contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) update

Please note an important update regarding contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) duration of use.

The licence for Nexplanon has changed and it is now licensed for contraceptive use for up to 5 years after insertion (previously 3 years).

This means:

  • Patients with a Nexplanon implant in situ can continue to rely on it for contraception for up to 5 years from the date of insertion.
  • Patients who are approaching the previous 3-year replacement point do not require routine replacement at that stage unless there are other clinical reasons to do so.
  • Practices should update patient advice and booking processes accordingly.
  • Removal remains available at any time if requested by the patient, or if clinically indicated.
