The Doctor or Nurse that you are seeing realises that you would not have made an appointment if everything was ok. You may be scared or embarrassed, but remember the person you are seeing wants to help you.
Below are some tips for making the most of your appointment with a health/ social care professional and some space for you to record information.
- Prepare for your appointment to make the best use of your time. Be specific about your symptoms and any treatment you are receiving, including complementary therapy, any allergies or reactions. Remember, any treatment may not be medical. Make sure your most important concerns are dealt with first.
- You may want to find out more about the issues concerning you in books or on the internet.
- Remember to ask if you are unsure about anything. You may want to prepare some questions.
- Do not assume the person you are seeing knows all about your case.
- Do not be afraid to be frank during your visit, everything you say will be confidential.
- Before you leave make sure you are clear about: What happens next? Who is doing what? When will it be done? If you would like a copy of any letters written you should ask now.
- Please be patient when you try to contact health and social care staff, remember they are busy too. For example if a call to a GP surgery is not urgent try to avoid calling before 10am.
- If you decide to block unrecognised calls on your telephone line you will block our numbers if we try to call you.
- Do you need help to explain your situation? It should be possible to bring a trusted person to your appointment, but please confirm beforehand.
- If things aren’t working out, take up the issue with the person responsible such as the surgery Practice Manager or your key worker. If there is still a problem it can be addressed independently through the Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01803 210500
